Corgo Viaduct

PORTUGAL (M60-I) 2011-2012

Location
Vila Real, Portugal
Year
2011-2012
Project
Type: Eastern Viaduct: total length of 1278 m (4192 ft.)
Typical Span: 60 m (196 ft.)
Deck width: 25 m (82 ft.)
Typical Cross Section: Box
Equipment features
Model: MSS M60-I
Construction Type: In situ (In Place)
Type: Underslung MSS
OPS System: Integrated
Performance: 10-day cycles
Challenges
• Piers with height exceeding 100m (328 ft.), the highest with 114m (374 ft.)
• The machine to be used would have to be autonomous and the supply of materials would have to be done using the previously built deck
• Very strong winds
• The building consortium companies didn’t wanted to invest in equipment
Solutions
• Autonomous Pier Bracket Assembly System
• Integrated cranes
• Construction in three stages: Box Girder with Movable Scaffolding System (Stage I y II); • Extension using cantilever machine (Stage III)
• Supply of materials carried out via the already built deck
Results
• Construction period: 63 weeks
• Fast construction (a cycle of 7 days/span was reached)
• Industrialised and operationally facilitated construction
• Very high construction quality due to the reduction and control of deformations
• OPS System allowed the casting of the box in two phases without any danger of cracking
• Rental Solution enabled the Consortium to pay only what was used in this work
